Appreciation Post

Okay, first of all: I hardly can believe it.
I have 100 days already behind me, and only 200 left - exactly one third of my year is over now.
Somehow, it feels as though I got the idea to do my exchange year just yesterday - while in fact I had it (for the first time) in seventh grade and then again in eighth. Where has time gone? Why is it flying so fast? And wasn't I just sitting in Austria, compiling my resumée for my application for YFU - and I can't tell you how glad I am to have gone with kulturLife instead. You don't hear the best of things about YFU, so even though it is cheaper, it is exactly that: cheaper. Not less expensive. I wouldn't trade my organisation here and my school and my teachers and my hostfamily for anything.

And the other thing I have to 'celebrate' is: My blog just hit the 18.000 clicks! Wow, guys, it's making me really proud that so many of you are reading this stuff! (Or just clicking on it, although I really hope it's the former rather than the latter.) Keep it coming! :D

So, what have I done on this lazy Monday?

It was rather slow-paced - except for the copious amounts of homework I have gotten from my teachers!

First of all, Japanese. I took my test, feeling not prepared at all, but I don't think it went badly. I don't know, we haven't yet gotten it back (of course not). Then he heaped the Chapter 6 Manga, the Chapter 6 Workbooklet, the Chapter 6 Exam Preparation Sheet and some more practice stuff on me. When does he think I will be able to do that? Like, our days are planned from 8 am to 10 pm, I won't have any time for schoolwork, and Saturday I will most likely catch up on my sleep and Sunday is the German Christmas Concert!

Anyway. Second lesson: Spanish: It was rather enjoyable, but I got almost even more homework than in Japanese. But at least Spanish is somewhat easier. We have at least the same writing system, and knowing Latin isn't something bad, either.

English: Mr Derksen actually was ill, but instead of starting on my homework pile I opted to read. Not that I regret it, I was like really tired, but still.

Biology: Well... we did dissect our pigs today. Foetal pigs. With the umbilical cord (Nabelschnur) still attached. And they were smelly. But I think the worst smell was the preservative (Konservierungsmittel) mixed with Latex Gloves and Febreeze. Especially the latter was horrible. And I couldn't get the Latex smell out of my hands!

But now I can say, I touched the intestine of a pig. And the umbilical cord. And the liver. And the pancreas. And the gallbladder. And the small intestine. The big intestine actually was green!

Well, I couldn't take any photos, because a) it was really gross and b) I forgot my mini-SDHC at home. So, not memory card, no photos.

Well, talking about technology: I managed to bust my kindle USB-cable. Luckily, my phone has the same charger (mini-USB, as far as I know), but it's not really dead; there just was a problem with my laptop, as it didn't want to recognize my kindle. It wouldn't even let my kindle charge, and I was in the middle of filling it with delicious new stories! :)

Well, I rebooted my laptop and now all my problems are gone. So before freaking out, reboot. It actually does help.

I also finally got all my stuff for Vancouver together.
I still have that nagging feeling that I have forgotten something, but all that's missing is my wash stuff.
I have
Skihose&-jacke
Winterstiefel
High Heels
Anzug (Hose, Shirt, Jacket)
PJs
Shirts
Jeans
Longsleeves
Chocolate!
Toque,
Skihandschuhe
Handschuhe
Block
Pencilcase
Spanishbook
Tuch
Kindle
Ladekabel
Handy
Ipod
Ladekabel
Steckdosenadapter

(Sorry for the Denglish mix, I just copy&pasted it from my conversation with Doro!)
And I guess I'm gonna head to bed in the foreseeable future. I want to catch at least seven hours of sleep, and it is already 9:20 pm. And my alarm clock will ring at 5 am.
Juhu.
Who again thought this was a good idea?

Have a nice week!
You'll hear from me on Saturday again! (Or, if you're lucky, on Friday already, but according to my stats and the comments it doesn't matter anyway... Have I gotten so boring?)

Learning Sunday

Phew.
I hate Sunday's on which I have to learn. Fortunately for me, After tomorrow, there is Vancouver! And there is snow! (No picture, I forgot to take one and now it's already really dark)

I have already started packing, since I washed my clothes yesterday (the drier, apparently, was too hot; one shirt [I had washed two very similar shirts, bought in the same shopping trip, looking the same, only distinction the colour - and now the size.] and one of my sleep tops are kind of smaller now, but it's not as though it matters so much ;) ) and folded them today it kind of made sense.

Then I also finished my Japanese writing booklet, as we need to have that completed to take our exam tomorrow; if we don't have it completed we're not allowed to write the exam, resulting in a zero. (Fortunately, I was almost finished and only had one writing exercise left to do) And now I'm more or less reading up on "Of Mice And Men", because while I have indeed read (would be stupid if I hadn't), I'm not sure I can remember everything, and schmoop.com presents in quite a nice way (there is sarcasm involved, so it can't be bad, and Mr Derksen recommended the site).

I'm struck again and again how awesome it is that I can actually speak English - and I don't mean this in a show-off kind of way, but the simple fact that we can speak and that we can learn a second language, that we can share thoughts, even though there must have been so many accidents and so much chance involved and it's just ... English is so easy for me now, almost like German (it fluctuates, actually, I have periods where it's easier than German, and then I periods where German is easier, and then I have periods where I can speak neither, which always sucks), and it's just so amazing that we, a heap of cells, a heap of molecules, atoms, quarks if you want to break it down completely, a heap out of stuff that probably would fill way less than a schnaps tumbler if we broke up all those powers keeping it together (the powers that bind molecules, or the powers that keep the atom core 'united' with the electrons), that this heap out of inorganic material can actually see, hear, feel, think and share these things, that's just so unbelievable for me sometimes... and I'm seeing, I'm boring and confusing you with all this weird stuff.
I don't even know where it's coming from, so I will push it onto the fact that I'm still not really all the way healthy (I'm tired, for goodness' sake, after 9 hours of sleep!), and I'm actually quite glad I could write it down now.
Oh, and I haven't actually read through it again, so I take no responsibility for how understandable it is!

Otherwise... Oh right, I played 'Just Dance 3' with Bobby today, and it was actually pretty fun! :o
Yes, I can't believe it either!

Have a great start into the week!

Julia

ETA:

Okay, it seems as though I won't be taking my English exam tomorrow, my teacher said he might be sick (not feeling well - bad time of the year, seriously!). Not that I mind.
That I don't have to take the test, I mean.

New hostfamily!

So, I've been here for a little more than 5 hours - and it's been five brilliant hours!

My new hostparents are both very nice, and the girls, Jenna and Stephanie, are really, really awesome!
My room is similar in size and located in the basement, just off the living room with the Wii and the TV, but the space is used in a better way. Maybe it's even bigger.

But I guess I won't be here so much alone with the two girls!
They are girl scouts (Pfadfinder) and play soccer and are in French Immersion, and well, it's so much fun with them!

So, I trudged home from school - I didn't hurry, because I was afraid my hostmother would be home alone - and I was lucky, it was only Steven at home.

My coordinator Ms White came pretty quickly, and we packed all my stuff into her car. It's pretty small, but hey, everything fit!

I hugged Steven goodbye and thanked him for taking me home, and then I petted Coco one last time, before climbing into Ms White's car.
We talked on the way to the new house, and I have to say: she's so wonderfully nice.

We arrived at the new house and I realized that I had passed it every day - on my way to school.
The door was opened by a small girl (Jenna), and we were introduced.
Jenna is 10 and Stephanie is 8, and after I've checked back with them (and their parents, of course) you might even get pictures!

They helped me put everything inside, showed me the house and the rooms (my room is as big as the girls' rooms combined! :o) and then we talked to get to know each other better.

We'll go to the gym tomorrow, probably!

At the door to my room there was a nice surprise for me, made by Stephanie (I guess):

And another one on my desk!

I started unpacking, the girls helped me (a bit) and then there was dinner, but not without a dress-up by Stephanie first (I guess I can upload that picture, since she's not really visible there) in my Canada pullover and my high-heels (and yes, 2 1/2 inch count as high heels!)! :)

Then there was dinner, which was a huge thing - there are five people who want to be fed, and I'm not really used to that, but it was very nice.
After dinner, there was another surprise:
dessert!

It was such a nice gesture, I can hardly describe it!

So yeah, afterwards I finished unpacking, I couldn't find my nice shawl anywhere (the rhubarb one Mama knitted me, I don't know where I put it!) and I read with Stephanie - she has to read 20 minutes in French, so I said, I'm gonna read, too.
And she read 40 minutes - 20 quietly and 20 aloud to me.
It was all very enjoyable.

Today Term 2 started - all the grades are set back to 0 (or rather: nothing) and people like my neighbour in Spanish don't have foods, but drama technique now.
Our report cards will come sometime next week, and there is no school on Monday - Rememberance day, where we all remember the fallen soldiers from the World Wars.
Actually, it is on Sunday, so we have the ceremony at school on Friday, but since it is in the weekend, we have the Monday after free!
This is what everybody has on their clothing:

The Poppy comes from this poem by an army surgeon of WW I

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
         In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

And now I'm really, really tired. So that's it from me, good night!

For a detailed, day-on-day view, I can again only recommend Doro's blog - now also in English!

All my love from Canada,

Julia

I'm moving

Hi guys!

As I have already mentioned, I have a huge announcement to make:

I'm moving. Changing hostfamilies.

My Coordinator will pick me up at 4:05 PM tomorrow, and she will bring me to my new hostfamily.

It just didn't work out here.
I'm constantly feeling intimidated, and we have very few things in common.
After my panic attacks in school, I have talked extensively to a a family friend from Germany, who can understand my situation, my parents, my hostfather and my coordinator, and I have felt that the best decision for me would be to move. I just cannot hit "reset" and start over. That's not in my nature. I feel like I don't hesitate to give trust, but I'm having a hard time giving a refill of that trust well. If you lose it, I can't give you more. Or it takes me a very, very long time to give more trust.

Of course there is more to this matter, but that are not things I want to discuss on my blog.
You can find my whole thoughts on the situation and what's transpired in my Journal, which is already on its way to Germany - so some of you (like Lara, Lydia, Romy, Pizza and anybody else who's interested) will get in in January, as I cannot have it opened before Christmas. I wrote what I'm getting everyone for Christmas inside there!

Anyway, tomorrow my address will change, too.
Please don't send anything to my old address!
People I know (and trust) can contact me tomorrow, but I want to talk to my new hostparents first about giving their address away.

In less than twenty hours I'll be gone.
And I'm feeling more relaxed than in a long time. I feel like I suddenly can breath again.

The worst thing though was packing my things up. I don't know how I ever want to get that all back to Germany!
It's just so much - my suitcase, the big box my parents sent me, the boy my winter shoes came in, the box my hairdrier came in and three bags, as well as my backpack!
It's just so awfully much, you know?
But enough of that,
I hope you're all fine over there!

I got my English Score - 92.3%. Which is pretty good, in my opinion!
Depending on how he counts it - if he has one part names "Tests", like my Spanish class, that counts more than my essays - then it dents my grade. If he doesn't, I'd still have ... 98 or 99%. Which is perfectly acceptable.

I realized today that one of the boys in my Spanish class actually has longer hair than me! And he has a similar shaped face... Creepy. Honestly.

At the moment I'm so afraid that Romney will win the election - he is in the lead. 23 electoral votes or almost 2 million public votes. I'm so absolutely scared. I'm hoping that everybody in the US is being out there and voting - we can't have Mitt Romney climb into office. It'd be a disaster.
I think Joss Whedon, director of the Avengers, sums it up pretty well, what would happen:
Watch that video. It's absolutely brilliant. Really.

ETA 8:13 PM: Different source, newer statistics: Obama is in the lead! 47 electoral votes, which are important, although he is still about 2 Million popular votes behind Romney, which don't count, though.
But let's just say: Never before has a president of the US won the "throne" without winning the popular vote... Maybe Obama is the first?

ETA 8:33 PM: Obama has won. I can't describe how relieved I am. But he still lost the popular vote, as it seems right now!

ETA 8:47 PM: Obama is pulling up in regards to the popular vote, but he has won. Definitely.

Here is a graphic that shows tumblr tags - it'll be probably over, by the time you get there, but I want to have mentioned it.
And I'm honestly going to bed right now!

So okay, yesterday was a rather brilliant day, too.

I got on my biology test written yesterday 99%. And I didn't even prepare! Honestly, a fifth of the questions I didn't know, I guessed and/or went about in the "Ausschlussverfahren" (looking at which not to take). But well, I'm not complaining!
Then our Japanese test was postponed to today (not that I did anything for it, but well), and I have to admit: I cheated. But well, the teacher left the room, what do you expect?
(Admittance two: He was actually still in the room when I cheated)

And then Journalism... We all got a huge "well done" from Mrs Taylor, and of course she highlighted once again that I am only an ESL student...
And then we did impromptus (Stegreifreden). I didn't get to do mine, but we had topics like "Dogs are better cats than dogs", "Why Brownies are better than chips", "Women should join the miliatry" (made by a boy) and "everybody should go out there and vote" (done by our amazing captain Aislinn!).
And they were so funny! They only had 2 minutes to prepare a 2 minute speech, so it was really amazing what they did!

And we ended the lesson with a line debate:
The class is halved and then lined up on two sides of a hall, one side negative and one positive. And then we had the topic "Women are stronger than men". I was on the negative.

But we laughed so much as people of whom we knew that they had different opinions, spewed some bullshit (excuse the language please), especially on our side. Sarcasm was sometimes heavy in the air.
But it was so much fun, I can hardly describe it!

So okay, I'm sending all my love your way - and I'm gonna go to bed now soon, as I am really tired...

Packen

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Was ich eigentlich sagen wollte: Ich hab meine Reisetasche fertig.

Schuhe (I always prided myself on having only one pair of shoes... And then we went shopping in Wertheim Village...; ein Paar hohe Schuhe [8cm], ein Paar normale Geox [das zweite zieh ich in den Flieger an], ein Paar Flip-Flops, ein Paar Laufschuhe, ein Paar Einlagen [kommen ins Handgepäck!])
 Taschen (Berlin, Hochschule Regensburg)
 Duschgel
 Nagellack
 Rasierer
 Schminke
 Sonstiger Mädchenkram
 Haargummis
 Deo
 Perlenbastelzeug
 Andenken
 Süßigkeiten (Gummibärchen, Schokolade, Lebkuchen... :D)

Ganz liebe Grüße,
Julia

Feels, flight, fear and freight

Off Topic: Die Worte sind "Rat. Wedding.

Was ich damit aussagen möchte:

Ehrlich!

Mein iPod Nano Touch ...

Also, ich geh dann mal Wäsche zusammen legen - nachdem wir morgen was vor haben (Wandern gehen), Sonntag/Montag in Bochum sind und Dienstag Mamas Strickerinnen kommen (und ich wohl einen Doctor Who Marathon machen werde), muss ich heute schon packen! Whaaaa!
Jetzt wirds ernst! :D

Liebe Grüße,

Julia

Probepacken, I

  • 3 Jeans
  • 1 kurze Hose
  • 1 Sporthose
  • 1 Leggins
  • 2 Sportshirts
  • 8 T-Shirts
  • 2 Schlafanzug-Sets (kurzes T-Shirt + lange + kurze Hose)
  • 1 langen Schlafanzug
  • 3 Jacken
  • 2 Paar Schuhe (Wanderschuhe und Sneaker)
  • 1 Kleid
  • 1 Paar Tanzschuhe
  • 2 Tanzröcke (kurzer + langer)
  • 1 Reithose

Meine Tasche/Koffer!

Hier nochmal in groß!

Meine Laptoptasche! Von Mama gestrickt und gefilzt!

Mama hat mir auch eine Laptoptasche geschenkt! Selbstgemacht!

Also,
best regards,
Julia

Countdown

Größe: 35 x 32 x 74 cm (H/B/T)
Gewicht: 1.430 g
Volumen: 80 l
Name: Deuter realy 80 2012 black-check

Also ehrlich...

Julia
